How to Configure Business Central Dimension Defaults in Paystand

Use dimension defaults to provide a fallback when Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central requires a dimension that is missing from a Paystand receivable. You can apply a default to one posting account or to all posting accounts.

Important: A default only fills a missing value. Paystand never replaces a dimension value already present on the receivable.

Out of scope: Paystand uses invoice-header dimensions only. Dimensions that exist only on invoice lines are not imported, stored, or used when a default is applied. Do not configure a Paystand default expecting it to complete a line-level dimension.

Before you start

Make sure that:

  • Your Paystand account is connected to Microsoft Dynamics 365 Business Central.
  • Your Business Central environment has the current Paystand extension. See How to Keep the Paystand Extension Updated in Business Central.
  • The dimension code, dimension value, and bank or G/L posting account already exist and are active in Business Central.
  • You have access to update integration settings in the Paystand Dashboard.
  • The required dimension is present or missing at the invoice header. Invoice-line dimensions are out of scope and are not imported as receivable dimensions.

For an overview of supported behavior, see Business Central Dimensions in Paystand.

1. Open Dimension defaults

  1. Sign in to the Paystand Dashboard.
  2. Open Settings, then select General.
  3. Scroll to MS Business Central Settings.
  4. Under Dimension defaults, select Add dimension default.

Connected MS Business Central Settings page with the Dimension defaults panel and Add dimension default button

A connected Business Central account displays Dimension defaults under MS Business Central Settings.

2. Choose a Business Central dimension

  1. Open the Business Central dimension list.
  2. Select the required dimension code.

Add dimension default dialog with the Business Central dimension list open, showing dimension codes synced from the connected company

The Add dimension default dialog guides you through dimension, scope, and fallback-value selection.

The available dimensions and their shortcut positions are read from your connected Business Central company. You select the dimension code; Paystand assigns its Business Central shortcut position or treats it as an extended dimension.

3. Choose where the default applies

Select one of these options:

  • Specific posting account: Recommended when a particular bank or G/L account requires the dimension. Then select the applicable Posting account.
  • All posting accounts: Use only when the same fallback value should apply to every posting account.

An account-specific default takes priority over an all-accounts default for the same dimension.

Add dimension default dialog with All posting accounts selected and an all-accounts posting rule preview

Choose All posting accounts only when the same fallback value should apply everywhere.

4. Choose the fallback value

  1. Open the Default value list.
  2. Select a valid Business Central dimension value.
  3. If the page shows held postings that should use this value, select Also apply to currently held postings.
  4. Review the posting rule preview, then select Save default.

The new rule appears in the Dimension defaults list. Future supported postings use it only when that dimension is missing from the receivable.

How the value is chosen

Paystand uses the first available value in this order:

  1. A value already present on the receivable.
  2. A default for the specific posting account.
  3. A default for all posting accounts.
  4. A default configured on the account in Business Central.

This means changing a Paystand default does not alter dimension values already stored on a receivable.

Resolve a posting held for a missing dimension

  1. Open Settings > General > MS Business Central Settings.
  2. In the Dimension defaults panel, find the Action required notice.
  3. Select the action to review the affected posting or postings.
  4. Choose the required Business Central dimension value.
  5. If you want to reuse the value for future postings with the same scope, keep the option to save it as a default selected.
  6. Select Save & retry.

Paystand retries the held posting with the selected dimension value. Confirm that the action-required count decreases and that the posting is no longer listed as blocked.

Recover a blocked transfer

If a missing dimension blocks a posting inside a transfer, the settings page shows Action required · blocked transfer and identifies the missing dimension, G/L account, original posting date, and Business Central posting window.

Note: This status concerns the posting or writeback to Business Central. It does not mean the payer’s completed payment failed or should be collected again.

  1. Open Settings > General > MS Business Central Settings.
  2. Under the blocked transfer, select Supply value to choose the missing dimension value. Saving it as a future default is optional.
  3. If the original posting date is still accepted by Business Central, select Save & retry. Paystand retries the held posting.
  4. If the transfer shows Date expired, select Review transfer.
  5. On the Transfer Report, review the Original posting date, Current BC window, blocking posting, G/L account, and Business Central error.
  6. Select Choose posting date & retry.
  7. Choose a New posting date inside the displayed Business Central window and enter a required Reason.
  8. Review the accounting impact, then select Validate in BC & retry.

Paystand retries only the blocked posting and then completes the transfer. The selected date, merchant user, timestamp, original date, and reason are recorded in the recovery activity.

Edit or deactivate a default

  1. Return to the Dimension defaults list.
  2. Open the action menu for the default.
  3. Select Edit to change its scope or value, or select Deactivate to stop using it.
  4. Confirm your changes.

Deactivating a default does not change dimensions already posted to Business Central.

Verify the result in Business Central

  1. Complete or retry a supported payment posting in Paystand.
  2. Open the resulting posted entry in Business Central.
  3. Review its dimensions or Dimension Set Entries.
  4. Confirm that an existing receivable value was preserved, or that the expected fallback was added when the receivable had no value.

Troubleshooting

The Dimension defaults panel is missing

  • Confirm that the Paystand Business Central integration shows Connected.
  • Confirm that the current Paystand extension is installed and enabled in Business Central.
  • Refresh the Dashboard after the connection is restored or the extension is updated.

A dimension, value, or posting account is missing from a list

  • Confirm that it exists and is active in the connected Business Central company.
  • Confirm that the correct Business Central company is connected to Paystand.
  • Refresh the page to reload Business Central configuration.

A default did not replace the receivable value

This is expected. Receivable dimensions always take priority; defaults fill missing values only.

A posting is still held after retry

  • Review the latest error for any additional required dimension.
  • Confirm that the selected value is still active in Business Central.
  • Confirm that the posting date is allowed in Business Central.

Notes and limitations

  • This setup is designed for the standard posted sales-invoice flow.
  • If you use service invoices or finance charge memos, contact Paystand Support before relying on Paystand dimension defaults for those documents.
  • Complete transfers are supported, including recovery from a missing dimension or expired posting date. Partial or sliced transfer application is not included in the current Business Central integration.
  • Invoice-line dimensions are out of scope. Paystand uses invoice-header dimensions only. Line-level dimensions are not imported as receivable dimensions and are not completed by a Paystand default.
  • If one payment is applied across invoices with conflicting dimensions, contact Paystand Support to review the expected accounting treatment.
