Bank Message
Sold to Another DFI
Issue
This error indicates that the recipient’s bank account, previously held at one financial institution, has been transferred to another Depository Financial Institution (DFI). As a result, the original account information (routing number and account number) is no longer valid.
Why This Happens
Financial institutions occasionally sell or transfer account portfolios to another bank.
When this occurs, the old routing and account details become invalid, leading to transaction failures.
This error does not mean the payer’s account is closed; rather, it is now maintained at a new financial institution.
Next Steps
Notify the Payer
Let the payer know that their account information has changed due to the DFI transfer.
Request updated bank details (new routing and account number).
Update Payment Information
Have the payer re-enter their new account details in the checkout flow.
If using a saved payment method, ensure the old tokenized account is removed or replaced with the updated one.
Retry the Payment
Once the updated account details are provided, the payer can retry the payment successfully.
- Payments cannot be processed using old routing/account information once a DFI transfer occurs.
- Merchants should advise payers to verify their bank details directly with their financial institution.
- If recurring payments are set up with old account details, these must be updated to avoid repeated failures.
